Tips for Illustration Beginners
What I Would Tell My Newbie Self If I Could Turn Back Time
The video is in Chinese with English subtitles
Dear readers, I’m so happy to share with you again! Today’s video is all about the most valuable advice I’ve gathered on my journey of creating and learning illustration. While I can't turn back time, I can pass these insights on to you and I hope you find them helpful.
Video Content:
The Importance of Composition: Why having a concept of composition is crucial.
What to Draw vs. Drawing Well: Emphasizing that “what to draw” is more important than “drawing well”.
Understanding Color Weight: How to use grayscale to review your work.
Breathing Life into Characters: Characters give a true soul to an illustration. Add depth to your characters' performances (perhaps my background in acting makes me insist on good character performance!).
Artistic Exchange: Join communities and engage in discussions to accelerate your progress
You might be new to my substack, so let me introduce myself: Hi~I’m Poppy, an illustrator. I’ve successfully launched an online course (in Taiwan) using Procreate as the main tool (because it’s user-friendly and helps you learn digital drawing logic easily).
My course is designed for beginners. Having some experience in creating picture books and illustrations, I noticed that communication with art directors or editors is always in writing(text). That is why, my course is structured around analyzing text and develope to an image(illustration)
(However, I must make it clear that starting an illustration doesn’t always have to begin with text; you could start with sketches or even music. Miyazaki, for examle, listens to music for inspiration when he hits a creative block.)
In my online course, I provide personalized feedback on each student’s assignments and offer various resources to help you improve. It’s perfect for those of you who prefer to practice on your own.(like coaching)
